UTONIC® Charge: the science

The two key ingredients in UTONIC® Charge are spirulina and kale, which are both rich in B vitamins that assist in sustaining energy metabolism across the day.

At UTONIC®, we believe that you are what you eat – and drink. UTONIC drinks are made with targeted nutrients and concentrated whole foods to support specific functions in everyday life, helping you transform the way you feel. But how do they work? Here’s the science:

UTONIC® Charge is designed to provide a sustained boost for your body and mind.

The two key ingredients in UTONIC® Charge are spirulina and kale, which are both rich in B vitamins that assist in sustaining energy metabolism across the day.

B vitamins are linked to playing essential roles in the supply of energy to body tissues, in carbohydrate metabolism and in the metabolic links between carbohydrate, protein and fat metabolism. Spirulina is one of the only plant based foods to contain Vitamin B12, which is mainly obtained in the diet through meat and animal products. Vitamin B12 is essential for normal blood function, neurological function and necessary for the synthesis of fatty acids required for nerve transmission and, in conjunction with folate, for DNA synthesis (NHMRC 2006).

Another important nutrient required for energy found in both spirulina and kale is iron. Iron is required for the protein haemoglobin, which is necessary for the transport of oxygen to tissues throughout the body. If normal levels are not maintained, tiredness and fatigue can occur (NHMRC 2006).

These nutrients are combined with green tea, which contains L-theanine and natural caffeine to help give you a mental lift so you feel more alert.

The effects of caffeine alone are well documented, however the combination of caffeine and L-theanine is thought to have a greater benefit and assist cognitive performance across the day.

A study where caffeine and L-theanine were supplemented together showed that ‘mental fatigue’ ratings, faster simple reaction times and faster numeric memory reaction times were improved (Haskell 2008). Another study showed improved accuracy, self-reported alertness and reduced fatigue (Giesbrecht et al 2010). The psychological effects of lower doses of caffeine, like that found in tea, in combination with L-theanine were reviewed, finding that they can have a positive effect on alertness, focused attention and accuracy (Byran 2008).

UTONIC® Charge is a good source of Vitamin C and Vitamin B12 and a source of Riboflavin and Iron.
